Calculation assumptions

  • Vacation is 15 business days per year of continuous work (Labor Code art. 130). There is no 30% surcharge (unlike El Salvador).
  • The base is the average of the ordinary and extraordinary remuneration of the last year (Labor Code art. 134), not 6 months. This calculator uses the monthly salary you enter as that average.
  • The daily salary is the monthly salary ÷ 30; the Code fixes the base but not this arithmetic, so it is a disclosed convention.
  • The proportional compensation is owed on any termination cause (Labor Code art. 133) and is computed as 15 days × days worked ÷ 365.
  • The base excludes the Q250 incentive bonus. Vacation pay is subject to ISR and IGSS, deductions that are outside the scope of this single-payment calculator.

What this calculator does

Calculates your vacation pay in Guatemala. You are entitled to 15 business days per year of continuous work (Labor Code art. 130), or the proportional share if you worked less than a year.

Unlike El Salvador, there is no 30% surcharge: the salary for the 15 business days is paid.

Who it is for

  • Workers who want to verify their vacation pay.
  • Employers and payroll staff who calculate full or proportional vacation.
  • Labor advisors and students who need a clear, traceable calculation.

What information you need

  • Your average monthly salary of the last year (without the Q250 incentive bonus).
  • Whether you worked a full year or less.
  • In the proportional case, the days worked in the service year.

How it is calculated

The daily salary is the monthly salary ÷ 30.

For a full year, the pay is the daily salary × 15 business days.

For less than a year, it is proportional: daily salary × 15 days × days worked ÷ 365.

Formula

Daily salary
daily = monthly salary ÷ 30
Vacation for a full year
pay = daily salary × 15
Proportional vacation
pay = daily salary × 15 × days worked ÷ 365

Worked example

You earn Q6,000 per month. We compare a full year with a proportional case of 182 days worked.

  1. Daily salary = Q6,000 ÷ 30 = Q200.00.
  2. Full year: Q200 × 15 = Q3,000.00.
  3. Proportional (182 days): Q200 × 15 × 182 ÷ 365 = Q1,495.89.

For a full year you receive Q3,000.00; for 182 days, Q1,495.89.

How to interpret the result

The base is the average of the ordinary and extraordinary remuneration of the last year (art. 134), not 6 months. This calculator uses the monthly salary you enter as that average.

The proportional cash compensation is owed on any termination cause (art. 133), not only dismissal.

To be entitled, a minimum of 150 days worked in the year is required (art. 131). Paid leave and sick leave count as worked.

Common mistakes

  • Using 6 months as the base: in Guatemala the base is the average of the last year (art. 134).
  • Applying El Salvador's 30% surcharge: it does not exist in Guatemala.
  • Including the Q250 incentive bonus in the base: it is not salary.

Frequently asked questions

How many vacation days are given in Guatemala?

It is 15 business days per year of continuous work (Labor Code art. 130).

How is vacation pay calculated?

The daily salary (monthly salary ÷ 30) is multiplied by the 15 business days. In the proportional case it is adjusted by days worked ÷ 365.

Does Guatemala have a 30% vacation surcharge?

No. Unlike El Salvador, Guatemala applies no 30% surcharge; the salary for the 15 business days is paid.

What is the vacation salary base?

The average of the ordinary and extraordinary remuneration of the last year (art. 134); it is only 3 months for agricultural or livestock businesses.

Is proportional vacation paid on resignation?

Yes. The proportional compensation is owed on any termination cause, including resignation (art. 133).

How is proportional vacation calculated?

Multiply the daily salary by the 15 business days and by days worked ÷ 365. With Q6,000 per month (Q200 daily) and 200 days worked: Q200 × 15 × 200 ÷ 365 = Q1,643.84. The 365 divisor is a practice convention.

Does vacation pay IGSS and ISR in Guatemala?

Yes. Unlike the aguinaldo and bono 14, vacation pay is ordinary remuneration: it is part of the total salary for IGSS (4.83% for the worker) and is subject to labor income ISR.

How many days must I work to be entitled to vacation?

A minimum of 150 days worked in the year (art. 131). Paid leave and sick or accident leave count as worked days toward that requirement.

Can I accumulate vacation across several years?

It is not cumulative year to year; it must be taken within the 60 days following the completed service year (art. 132). On termination you may claim cash compensation for omitted vacations of the last five years (art. 136).
