How it is calculated
The tip is the bill amount multiplied by the percentage and divided by 100, rounded to 2 decimal places (half up).
The total to pay is the exact sum of the bill plus the tip.
When splitting, each person pays the total divided by the number of people, rounded down to the cent; the last person also pays the leftover cents, so the shares reconcile exactly with the total.
Some places may add a service charge to the bill: check the receipt before leaving an additional tip.

Worked example
A Q45 dinner shared by 3 people, with a 15% tip. How much does each person pay?
- Calculate the tip: Q45 × 15 ÷ 100 = Q6.75.
- Add up the total: Q45 + Q6.75 = Q51.75.
- Divide between the people: Q51.75 ÷ 3 = an exact Q17.25 per person.
Each person pays Q17.25 and the shares reconcile with the Q51.75 total.
How to interpret the result
The per-person total already includes the tip: nothing else needs to be added.
When the division is not exact, the difference is a matter of cents: the last person pays a few cents more so the sum matches the total. The calculator shows that adjusted share separately.
The tip is calculated on the bill, not on the tip-inclusive total: 15% of Q45 is Q6.75, even though the final total is Q51.75.

- Calculating the tip on a total that already includes a service charge: check the receipt before applying the percentage.
- Splitting the bill into rounded shares that do not add up to the total: someone quietly overpays or underpays.

Why does one person pay a few cents more?

How do I calculate a 10%, 15%, or 20% tip?
Start from 10%, found by moving the decimal point one place: 10% of Q32.50 is Q3.25. 20% is double (Q6.50), and 15% is 10% plus half of that 10% (Q3.25 + Q1.63 ≈ Q4.88). The calculator buttons apply these percentages instantly.
How do I split the bill and the tip between several people?
First add the tip to the bill total, then divide by the number of people, so everyone covers their proportional share of the tip. A Q45 dinner with a 15% tip is Q51.75, which between 3 people is an exact Q17.25 each.
Does the tip go before or after VAT?
The custom is to base the tip on the consumption (food and drink), not on the tax. Since this calculator applies the percentage to whatever amount you enter, you can use the pre-VAT subtotal as the base if you prefer to follow that practice.
